Chapter 1 ♥ Akime ; Afraid
Part V
Battered and in a terrible state, Akime dragged herself up to her feet and stumbled to the door. By then, the floor was covered in layers of white fluffy snow. Staggering, she walked trough the snow, her bare foot sinking into the loosely packed snow in every step. As the wind blew across, she hugged her naked body to prevent the heat from escaping her already cold body. Not knowing that trailing behind her were drips of blood, she stumbled into a forest that Arzeal owned at the back of his property. Even in winter, the trees that were clustered there were still green. In the pitiful snow scene, it was still nevertheless ironically beautiful. Akime continued to track down the snowy path till she reached an abandoned wooden hut. With very little strength that she had left, she weakly pushed open the door and stumbled in. Collapsing on the floor, she struggled desperately for breath as her hot breath condensed after every breath. She felt herself suddenly slipping in and out of conscious. Panting desperately for her next breath, she suddenly felt her will to live slip out of her grasp as she plunged into a hole of darkness.
// I can’t forget you.//
“Akime…” She heard a small melodious voice called out to her. Akime turned and saw the land being covered by a layer of thick fog. “Akime…” the voice called out, now more clearly compared to the previous time. This time, Akime swerved to her left and as the fog started to clear, a silhouette started to form. Akime squinted her eyes to make out the face of the mysterious voice owner. “Akime…” at that instance, the fog suddenly was blown away, and Akime saw a pretty lady in her early 30’s with long wavy auburn hair and a pair of ash gray orbs reflecting a sense of familiarity. Her white ankle length dress occasionally floated when a gust of gentle wind blew across. “Akime…” She again whispered.
“O…okaasan…” Akime called out. Though her mother passed away way before she could even remember how she looked like, but she has saw her face in so many photographs that her mother’s face has somewhat been imprinted deeply in her memory. “Okaasan… why are you here?” Akime asked as she approached her mother. But, before she could reach her mother, Akime bumped into a hard thing. “Okaasan!” Akime yelled as she bumped into the interfering object yet again.
“Using force is futile my dear…” her mother said gently. “Your time is not yet up.” Her mother smiled as she walked to the transparent object and placed her palm on where Akime’s cheek was positioned. “Akime, you have to be happy for papa and Obaasan sake understand?” her mother told her as Akime started to tear up.
“But…” Akime retorted. “But… nobody… even if I died… nobody would care…Obaasan is gone… nobody cares for me… Why should I continue to live?” Akime asked.
“Do you really think that if you leave the world… nobody would care?” Her mother asked her.
“It’s the truth.” Akime dismissed.
“If that is the truth then why is Mizuhara there?” Her mother asked she pointed behind her. She turned and saw an open door. Through the door, she saw Nicol and Sui looking around and searching as the snow fell. Emotions started to run wild as she saw Sui driving recklessly on the busy highway.
“His love will fade away… who in the right mind will love somebody like me?” Akime shook her head as she rejected the truth.
“What if he doesn’t give up? What if his love for you persists? You will only cause him more pain.” Her mother whispered.
“But what if it’s the opposite? What if I only bring him more pain? What should I then do?” Akime wailed. Her mind mixed up by the overwhelming emotions that were racing through her body.
“That isn’t up for you to decide. He’s not giving up yet…” Her mother persuaded. Akime watched as she saw Sui maneuvering through the snowy streets. They stopped in front of the mansion. Nicol immediately jumped out of the convertible and rushed into the gates. But, Sui stay put. Akime stared at the door. Sub-consciously she started pacing towards the door. She stretched out her hand and touched where Sui was and pressed her head on Sui.
“Sui…” She whispered as tears fell from her orange coloured orbs. She snuggled deeper onto Sui’s chest as she felt her heart clench in pain. Suddenly, a gun shot rang through her ears. Akime shot away from the portal and looked into it. Her eyes widened as she saw Sui’s left thigh bleeding.
“Sui!” Akime lunged towards the door but bounced back. “Sui!” Akime persisted clung at the door begging for Sui repeatedly as tears fell like snow. Losing all strength she had, Akime collapsed on the floor and started bawling her head off. Her tears fell and melted the snow when they came in contact.
“Akime, you see, you can’t live without him.” Her mother smiled.
“Okaasan… I want Sui… I need Sui...” Akime confessed as she sniffled. She turned and looked at the portal. She stood up and walked towards it. She stretched towards it and her hand passed through the jelly like portal. Akime turned back to have one final glance at her mother, but when she turned around, her mother was no longer there.
“Okaasan…take care…” She wished before walking through the portal. Soon, her shilouette disappeared from that dimension. Then, from behind a plum tree, a lady came out.
“Akime… mother will always watch over you… Be happy…”
// //
Akime winced as she opened her eyes. Her vision stilled blurred as she tried to stand up but she collapsed. Turning around, she saw that her leg has been bundled up by a rope.
“Help…” she cried softly, suddenly the door flung open, and the dark hut suddenly burst into light. Akime turned and squinted her eyes to look who it was. She was half way through figuring out who the person was when a blow suddenly was dealt on her head. Akime cried out a soundless cry. She brought her hand painfully up to her head to protect from the random blows that were raining down on her. She coughed out a pool of blood and her eyes started to tear up as the pain started to spread from her head to slowly the lower parts of her body.
“Give up?” The attacker asked. Akime chuckled and stared at her attacker.
“Don’t get your hopes too high.” Akime spat. The attacker nodded – obviously pissed – after a while, a blow came straight down on her leg making her leg go numb. Akime shut her eyes trying to overcome the numbing pain that is spreading through her whole body. She groaned as she lay on the bloodied wooden floor. She heard the sound of metal being picked up. Akime braced herself for the impact. Suddenly, her head started to hurt, then, it became wet, and soon, her vision started to blur as blood drip over her eyelids. She saw her attacker leave the hut.
“N…o… he…lp…” Akime moaned. She heard the footstep fade as the person left the hut. Then she heard the door being locked. Akime could feel her will seep out of her body like air escaping a balloon from a hole.
“He…lp…” She pleaded her voice getting sore. Even in the dark coldness, Akime felt her whole body struggled to pursue that fleeting warmth that she was desperately finding for.
“Help…” She gasped. She mustered all of her strength to utter another faint cry of help. She laid there in pain for hours, a gazillion liters of blood should most probably have leaked out of her frail little body that was filled with bruises, scars and burnt marks that never healed. Akime immediately turned to look at the door.
‘Am I hallucinating?’ Akime thought as she closed her eyes tight and opened. Now, the call was getting louder and clearer.
“Sui…” She whispered as she fell into a deep slumber.
// //
Akime winced as the bright light started to shine through the white translucent curtain. Then the door opened, Akime turned and saw Sui looking straight at her.
“You’re awake.” He smiled as he approached her and took a seat beside her and took her hand in his.
“I missed you.” Akime whispered softly. Hearing her own tone, she cleared her voice and said it louder. Sui smiled and hugged her.
“I miss you too.” Sui smiled. Then, they heard a shrill call of a bird from outside the window. Sui and Akime turned and looked at the window. There they saw a lovely bird with glossy sun like yellow feathers and a black beak resting on a branch of the old oak tree that was situated outside.
“Its spring?” Akime asked as she looked at Sui puzzled.
“Yeah, you were asleep for a month or so.” Sui frowned as he snuggled with Akime.
“Really?” Akime whispered and Sui nodded in reply. Akime smiled and looked outside as she saw the flower buds on the tree starting to bloom. Sui then picked up a tomato and cut it.
“Sui? Why a tomato?” Akime asked as she looked at Sui as though he was a Martian from Mars. Sui flashed Akime his trademark smile and passed Akime a tomato wedge and a satay stick. Then from a mysterious plastic bag that appeared from no where, he took out a piece of roasted chicken. He skewed them together with a satay stick and passed it to Akime.
“Too much apple and pear and orange, you will get sick of it.” He smiled gleefully. Akime laughed and took a stick from him and stuffed it in her mouth.
“Like it?” Sui asked. Akime giggled and nodded. Sui smiled and pulled out plastic containers that contained all kind of food and 2 containers of porridge and a packet of satay sticks.
“Lets eat~” Sui cheered as he opened the containers. Akime smiled as she rested her head on his shoulder. She viewed the wondrous spread of food and smiled. Somehow, she knew, she was safe.
// //
Akime woke up and looked around her; the room was dark and cold.
“Sui?” Akime called out and received no response.
“Sui?” Akime called out more urgently. Then, that night’s incident started to flash before Akime’s eyes.
“No…” She started to tear up and get more and more anxious. She started to shrink to the corner of the bed where she curled up into a ball and cupped her ears. “Help…” She cried. “Help…” She begged as she shut her eyes hoping that it will pass.
“Akime, Akime!” Akime felt somebody shake her. She opened her eyes and looked up and saw a concerned Sui.
“Sui!” Akime cried as she seeked comfort in Sui’s warm body. Her tears started to wet Sui’s top.
“Akime… shush okay…” Sui persuaded as he pried Akime away. “Everything is fine okay, everything is fine already.” Sui whispered as he settled Akime down. Akime started to hic cup and calm down and sat crossed legs on her bed.
“Now, I’ll be right back okay? I just need to get some things okay?” Sui told Akime as he arose from the seat and turned. Suddenly, he felt Akime’s grip on his wrist. He turned and saw Akime looking at him.
“Don’t go…” Akime started. “Don’t go please… I’m scared…” Akime begged. “I will be good, so please… don’t go… stay with me please…” Sui looked at Akime and sighed as he sat on the bed and brought Akime close.
“Okay, okay… I’ll not go okay?” Sui smiled as he felt Akime nod.
“I’ll protect you.” Sui said as he kissed her forehead. Akime squirmed out of Sui’s embrace and looked at him.
“Sui, after Arzeal sama stop coming after me, can you follow me to somewhere?” Akime asked.
“Why don’t we go now?” Sui suggested. “The police have already caught Arzeal and the others.” Sui disclosed. Akime looked at Sui and Sui nodded. “Its over.” Sui smiled. Akime then stood up and plucked out the saline tube and slid onto her slipper.
“Shall we go?” Akime whispered. Sui smiled and stood up and helped Akime by her elbow. Quietly, they made their way through the hall way and to the carpark where Sui got his car.
“Where to Milady?” Sui mocked.
“Seasons Orphanage.” Akime whispered as she pulled her gray wooly jacket closer to her body. Sui looked at Akime and nodded.
// Seasons Orphanage //
Akime exited the car and looked up at the 3 storey building. Taking a deep breath, she pressed the bell. She waited for a while and soon, the door opened. At the door stood a kind looking lady with hazel brown hair and violet pupils.
“Miss Akime am I right?” the lady asked. “You are Madam Kira’s granddaughter am I right?” The lady asked a little excited.
“Is it true that he is here?” Akime went straight to the point. The lady looked at Akime and nodded.
“Follow me.” The lady instructed as she led them down the corridor to the staircase. “Go up the stair case, the fourth room on the left.” She instructed. Akime nodded and went up the staircase with Sui following her behind. Akime could feel her heart beating wildly in her ribcage as she ascended the stairs. As she arrived upon the second level, she started to sub conciously count the steps that she took to reach to the room with a light blue door. On the door’s front was the name [ Jin ] spelt in caps. Akime traced her fingers across the name and brought her hand down to the metal handle. Taking a deep gulp for air, Akime twisted the door knob and she silently pushed the door open as quietly as she can and peeped in. In the dark room, she saw a silhouette of a young boy sleeping on a bed. Akime felt her heart quietened as she approached the boy. She sat on the floor beside the bed and looked at the boy. Smiling to herself, she brushed the boy’s fringe aside and kissed his forehead. Suddenly, the boy stirred and looked at Akime.
“Mama?” He whispered as he looked at Akime with his earnest light maroon orbs. Akime felt tears slip down her cheeks. Akime surveyed the boy as she placed her smooth hand on the boy’s warm cheek.
“A…Akime?” Sui asked a little shock. Akime ignored Sui and picked the child up and hugged it tight.
“Jin, is that really you?” She felt her voice tremble.
“Mama, name is Jin… are you mama?” The young boy asked. Akime smiled as tears flowed.
“Sui, this is our son.” Akime smiled. Sui looked at Akime shocked. After a moment of no longer than a heartbeat, Sui expression softened as he walked forward and hugged the mother and son.
“I love you…” Sui sighed.
// My love is enough for 3 //
++ 41 years later…
A lad with soft brown hair carrying a sleeping babe with strawberry blonde hair stood in front of two gray stones. The orange maple leaves fell gracefully down landing in the middle of the 2 gray stones.
“Otousan, okaasan, how are you? Kawai just gave birth to a daughter, isn’t she beautiful?” The lad boasted proudly as he cradled his cute little daughter.
“Not only that, we have also decided to name her Sumeko. Pa, ma, look after her just as how you have been looking after me.” The lad bowed. After promising that he will bring Kawai on the next visit, he turned and left. Then the baby gave out a gurgle. The lad looked at his daughter and gave a very familiar trademark smile. “Yes Sumeko, even till the end, they held hands.” The lad smiled.
On the 2 gray stones, there were neat inscriptions that went vertically down and it read “Mizuhara [Sui] Konishi” and “Akime Konishi” respectively.
//until the end, they held hands//
