Chapter 3 ♥ Shiroko ; Secret
“NO! YOU CAN’T LOVE HIM!” I heard mother yell as she glared at me angrily. I tried to yank my hand away, but mother kept her grip on my wrist firm.
“Are you going to give up?” mother yelled.
“Why?! Why can’t I love brother? Aren’t I’m adopted? I am not related to brother, so why? Why can’t I be with brother?!” I boomed as I gave a final yank which set me free from my mother’s grasp. Then I felt a stinging slap that went across my face. I held my hurt cheek as I stared at my mother.
“Not a single word from you!” Mother yelled I stared at her with teary eyes.
“Why…?” I whispered. Mother’s eyes soften as she looked at me. There I wished that I did not even ask that dreaded question.

Spring has arrived, the once barren blossom trees have now started to sprout up into beautiful cherry pink shades. As the Sun shone down warming up the cold land, birds started chirping together a tune, a welcoming tune, a farewell tune, or a tune that suggests that rain is coming? Soon, the bright sky was clouded by dark clouds. Soon, rain started pattering down on the busy street. Canopy of umbrellas started appearing as rain started to fall even harder, from a far; a sound of a girl’s crying could be heard.
As people walked past the young girl clad in a soaked in rainwater red woolen sweater with a brown skirt and a pair of Mary Jane they stared at her puzzled at her tears, but none stop to comfort her, neither did they rescue her from the frightening rain. She slowly broke down into tears as she heard the frightening claps of thunder, but still no one came to her rescue.
Mid noon came in a flash, the dark cloud that has been hovering over the city since the early hours of morning has refused to move over and has been continuing to pour. The young girl still stood there, her cries has stopped, but she still continued to stand under the rain refusing to leave the spot that she was standing even for a second. She constantly stare at the passersby faces hoping to see the face she was finding for.
“Niichan, why is she crying?” she heard a boy’s kind voice some where around her. She looked up and saw a young boy with a compassionate pair of hazel pupils.
“Shh, don’t look at people.” I heard the older male standing beside him shush the young boy.
“But niisan, she is crying.” He said his eyes still on the little girl. His brother stared at the young girl and walked up to her.
“Why are you crying?” He asked gently. The girl looked up and sniffed.
“Mama…” She sobbed.
“You’re lost?” He continued as the girl remained mum. “Come; let’s get you out of the rain.” He said as he held the little girl’s hand but the girl yanked her hand away.
“No! Mama said that she will come back… She…” She started to break into cold sweat. The older boy looked at the young girl in a state of shock. He placed his hand on her forehead and immediately pulled back when he realized how hot her forehead was.
“You’re having a fever; we need to get you out of the rain now. Asuran. Hold the umbrella!” The older male said as he shoved the umbrella to his petite looking brother and grabbed her hand.
“No…” she whispered as she tried to struggle out of his grasp but soon collapsed.
“Hey miss, miss!” The older boy nudged the young girl but got no reply.

Shiroko gasped as her eyes shot open. She looked around her and saw her small looking bedroom. She rubbed her eyes as she waded to the kitchen for a glass of water. She turned and looked at the empty house. Somehow, it didn’t feel like home.
“Shiroko? You’re awake?” Shiroko turned and saw a boy with dull blonde locks and a pair of hazel pupils.
“Hai Asuran niisan.” Shiroko bowed formally.
“Ne, okaasan isn’t awake, so relax.” Asuran laughed nervously at her formality. Shiroko relaxed a little bit and gave a curt bow before turning around and entered the kitchen where she reached out to take a ceramic navy blue mug and poured a glass of water and gulped it down quickly in one single gulp in an innocent attempt to flush out the horrible taste of the fever medicine that came from a past which she could no longer remember that clearly anymore. After a few full cups of water, she slumped down on the kitchen cabinet, her stomach bloated with water as she stared blankly at the well furnished kitchen. On the walls were cupboards made of wood with transparent glass panels showing of the well polished glass champagne glass. She closed her eyes, and in her mind, like a broken recorder, the scene of her standing in the urban part of the city alone repeated and never ceased to play in her little mind. Then, the dim kitchen burst into light as the glass chandelier lit to life. Shiroko turned and saw a stern looking beauty with wavy hazel brown hair; she immediately scrambled up onto her feet and bowed.
“Ohayou gozaimasu, okaasama.” Shiroko bowed her stomach rumbled in unease as she felt her mother circle her.
“Why did you talk to Asuran?” Shiroko heard her mother asked as she plucked a grape from its vine and placed it on her lips however made no impression on eating it.
“I… I did not…” Shiroko stuttered. Instantaneously, a stinging slap slapped across her face. She looked up and stared at her mother furious face.
“How dare you lie to me?” Her mother yelled angrily as she raised her hand to deal another stinging blow on Shiroko’s cheek. Shiroko shut her eyes tight bracing herself for the stinging slap, but the slap never came. Shiroko slowly peeked and saw an older male wearing a navy blue yukata, his messy hazel locks hanging over his light blue eyes.
“Kaasan, it’s getting late, Shiroko need to go to school.” The lad whispered in his mother’s ear. Shiroko mother glared angrily at Shiroko and then back at the lad. The lad nodded his head before indicating Shiroko that she can leave. Shiroko bowed before turning and rushing out of the kitchen and ran up the grand stair case that led to rows of room. Shiroko ran down that hallway but however did not enter in any room but continued all the way down the fine looking hallway till it reached the end. She turned and pushed open an oak door and saw another flight of stairs. She slowly ascended the stairs. At the top of that flight of stairs was a brown door. She twisted the doorknob and entered into a small room with lemon yellow wall paper. She plopped down on the lilac cushioned bed that was situated at the side of a window with a wooden frame and curled into a ball. Tears slipped down her cold cheek as she touched her cheek. Then, she heard the door open. She turned and saw the lad who stopped the second slap. Shiroko immediately sat up.
“Ryuu niichan…” she bowed as she acknowledged the presence of her brother. Ryuu smiled as he approached her. Gently, she sat beside her bed and touched her cheek.
“Does it hurt?” The brown hair lad asked gently. Shiroko nodded meekly not daring to look at her elder brother in the eye. She heard the handsome lad sigh as he pat her head.
“I’m sorry… I thought if I brought you back… you would probably me happier… but I guess I was wrong… instead… I brought you way more hurt…” Ryuu apologized as he hung his head in shame.
“Ryuu niichan… daijoubu…” Shiroko comforted Ryuu. “Ah, Ryuu niichan, I need to prepare for school lest I will be late…” Shiroko exclaimed as she pushed Ryuu out of the room. And shut the door behind her back. She went to the window bearing the intention of closing the baby blue curtains but when she looked down; her sight was focused on a boy around her age with long yet neat hazel brown locks walking down the pathway. Suddenly, he looked up. Shiroko immediately dived down onto her bed, her face red. After awhile, she peeked and saw the lad gazing upwards with a smirk plastered on his face. He smiled before waving her farewell and then left the front gate. Shiroko sighed dreamingly as she saw him meet up with his friends and left the gate. She cupped her face in between her palm as she looked out. Suddenly, she heard her cell phone ring. She flipped open her metallic pink phone and answered,
“Where are you?” She heard a feminine voice query.
“Home…” She whispered dreamingly.
“And do you know what time it is now?” The voice asked. Shiroko shrugged and reached out to take her clock. She stared at the round face of the clock and jaws dropped. She immediately hung up the phone and raced out of the room with her uniform untidily done. She panted as she zoomed down the empty hallway as the winter soft wind ran through her soft dyed copper brown locks. She was late for class - once again.
With barely minutes to spare, she dashed into the school gate. She heard somebody tsk-ing (ok. I know that there is no such word… but whatever. It’s not like you people read anyway…) at her. She turned and saw Asuran.
“Asuran kun!” She exclaimed as she approached him. Asuran rustled her brown locks and chuckled as he saw her cute expression. Shiroko smiled as she saw Asuran’s smile. She could feel the warmth of his smile spread through her body.
“Ah, you better head back to class. Class is starting soon.” Asuran informed her as he directed her to class. Shiroko bowed and headed to class .When she slid open the door, she felt a bucket of water come down on her drenching her school uniform. Shiroko stared at the class; her expression did not reflect any existence of shock. Instead, she just walked pass the giggling class and headed to her seat. She slunk onto her seat and looked at her badly vandalized table scribbled with names. She felt her classmates gaze burning on her back. She looked up and glared at the class. Suddenly, a shoe came flying towards her. Quickly, she dodged and pushed her chair back abruptly causing the chair to topple and stood up and glared at the person.
“What on Earth is your problem?!” Shiroko yelled angrily. The guy snickered.
“How dare you say this to us? Don’t forget your status down here. You are merely an adopted child. I heard you were abandoned by your parents. Maybe your parents hated you this much that’s why they kept you a secret. No birth certificate, nothing. You are THAT disgraceful. Not only that, you aren’t here cause of your natural birth but because your adoptive parents wealth. You are nothing but an inferior brat.” He hissed. Then a boy from across the room stood up and yelled an agreement. Soon, the classroom was filled with yells and scorns. Shiroko glared at the ground, tears plopping down her cheek. Then the door slid open and in came Asuran. The class immediately fell quiet. They watched as Asuran entered the classroom to take his seat before bursting into their gossips. Then, the teacher entered the classroom and the classroom finally fell into a hush.
Throughout the lesson, Shiroko spent the whole time rubbing off the scribbling of vandalism on her desk. Hot tears streamed down her cheeks as she gripped her eraser tightly.
“Am I really that unwanted, that even my parents decided to keep me a secret?” Shiroko mind burned with the thought. She shook her head vigorously before staring up at Asuran’s back.
“Not only am I a secret, must even my feelings be kept a secret…” She sighed annoyed by the sad fact. Finally, the school ending bell rang and all the people slowly packed their table. Shiroko slowly stood up and stuffed her stuff into her black school bag. Then, a dark shadow was cast down onto her. She looked up and saw a beautiful looking girl with wavy dusty blonde locks and a pair of hazel brown pupils.
“Mi…Miyori sama…” Shiroko whispered as she tried to not waver but in her heart, she wanted to cuddle in the corner like a mouse. Suddenly, a slap came down onto her cheek. Shiroko held her cheek as she refused to look at Miyori in her eyes.
“You little brat, how dare you steal my man?!” she yelled angrily.
“Wh…what do you mean?” Shiroko stuttered.
“What? How dare you still act innocent? Don’t lie; today I saw you and Asuran acting intimately.” Miyori yelled as she pushed Shiroko. Shiroko fell onto the floor bottom first. She looked at Miyori and tears sub-consciously slipped down her cheek.
“I’m sorry…” She whispered as she arose and ran out of the classroom passing Asuran before leaving the classroom.
“Why did she leave in such a hurry?” Asuran asked as he approached his fiancé – Miyori. Miyori turned and looked at Asuran.
“Asuran, we will be graduating in a week time. Sleep with me.” Miyori demanded. Asuran looked at Miyori shock scribbled over his face.
“What nonsense are you spouting?” Asuran stuttered as he walked away.
“ASURAN! What’s wrong with me? Why can’t you look at me like how you look at Shiroko! What’s wrong with me? What is making me so inferior compared to Shiroko?!” Miyori yelled.
“I’m sorry. I haven’t been true to myself… all this while, I have been keeping this secret… I’m sorry… actually… I am…”

When Shiroko arrived home, her mother immediately yelled for her. Shocked at the sudden call, she rushed up the stairs and knocked gently on the oak door. Shiroko then heard her mother snap her acknowledgement and Shiroko slowly twisted the door knob and pushed open the door. In the dim light, Shiroko could still figure out her mother’s angry expression.
“Okaasama…” Shiroko whispered frighten of her mother’s fury.
“Give up on Asuran.” Shiroko’s mother sighed.
“Why?” Shiroko demanded. Suddenly, Shiroko’s mother grabbed the Victorian style table lamp and threw it at the wall behind Shiroko making her cringe in
fear.
“ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE UP?!” Shiroko stared at her mother, tears emerging from her hazel orbs. She shook her head as she dropped her head.
“You cannot love Asuran.” Shiroko’s mother finally calmed down and looked at Shiroko.
“Why? Why can’t I love Asuran niichan?! Aren’t I adopted? Aren’t I and Asuran niichan unrelated?” Shiroko yelled back in confusion. In the darkness, Shiroko could see her mother shaking her head sadly.
“Shiroko… there has been a secret that I have not revealed all this year…” Shiroko mother confessed as she looked at Shiroko.
“Shiroko, I’m your mother.” Instantly, Shiroko grip on her school bag loosened and her school bag fell onto the floor.

A bald lady wearing a light yellow yukata sat in the middle of an empty hall holding a string of brown beads and muttering a chant. Slowly, light started infiltrating the dim hall litting it up. The lady slowly opened her eyes and looked at the statue in front of her. Slowly, she stood up and turned and slid open the made of bamboo door and exited the hall. She grabbed the hay broom and started sweeping the foyer getting rid of the autumn leaves. Then, a man climbed up the stairs and stood in front of the sweeping lady. Softly, he called out to that lady. The lady looked up and her grip loosened.
“A…Asuran niichan?”
“Konichiwa, abbottess Shiroko.” He bowed.
